2 main reasons which led to the changes in online gambling laws are:
1. the necessity to restrict online gambling sites in size and number
2. to tax the revenue of gambling portals
The introduction of new taxes will lead to the increase of the flow of gambling money to the budget of the country and will prevent the companies created for fraudulent activities from coming into existence.
One more concern of the Irish government is to protect young people from the expanding influence of online games. New online gaming rules will require the licensing of online gambling operators thus making them stay within the tax rules.
Some experts predict the swept of discontent of the gaming operators over the new tax laws, but the fears are rather exaggerated as gambling sites have to pay taxes on income to this or that country anyway.
New laws will bring changes in the supervision of the online gambling industry. Now it's divided between the minister of justice and the minister of finance. From 2012 all the power to supervise and inspect gambling facilities will pass to the minister of justice, which can mean tougher regulations and more inspections of gambling operators.
